International Federation of Musicians
The Orquestra Simfònica de Balears, which is facing financial difficulties, was proposed by the Balearic government a 10% cut in its already skeletal budget. This doesn’t seem to be enough for the Palma City and Majorcan Councils, who request a 37% and 32% cut respectively, which would make impossible for the orchestra to pursue its activities.
The musicians are already making important sacrifices (unfilled vacant positions, unpaid sick leaves etc.). The necessary collective effort in this period of crisis must not jeopardize a cultural mission of public service, which is essential to both the population of the island and the expectations of its visitors. After the discussions held between the orchestra committee and the government proved unfruitful, the Spanish association of orchestra musicians AMPOS decided to carry out an international awareness campaign, with the support of FSC-CCOO (Spanish FIM member).
FIM fully supports the musicians of the Orquestra Simfònica de Balears in their legitimate requests and urges the authorities to resume the dialogue in order to prevent irrevocable damage to this institution.
